France
The Arc de Triomphe (Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile) stands at the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle (formerly Place de l'Étoile) at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, where twelve avenues radiate in a star pattern. Commissioned by Emperor Napoleon in 1806 after his victory at Austerlitz to honour those who fought and died for France during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, it was designed by Jean-François Chalgrin in the Neoclassical style; construction was halted under the Bourbon Restoration and completed in 1836 under Louis Philippe I. Its sculptural reliefs include the famous Departure of the Volunteers of 1792 (La Marseillaise) by François Rude, and the names of French victories and generals are engraved on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath the vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I, marked by an eternal flame rekindled every evening since 1923.

Little Mermaid
Den lille Havfrue
Denmark
The Little Mermaid (Den lille Havfrue) is a small bronze statue (1.25 m tall, 175 kg) on a rock at the Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen. Sculpted by Edvard Eriksen and unveiled on 23 August 1913, it was commissioned in 1909 by Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg, after he was inspired by a ballet at Copenhagen's Royal Theatre based on Hans Christian Andersen's 1837 fairy tale. The face was modelled on the lead ballerina Ellen Price and the body on the sculptor's wife Eline Eriksen (Price refused to pose nude). A symbol of Copenhagen and one of Denmark's most photographed monuments, the statue has been repeatedly vandalised and beheaded since the 1960s.
